The first house is also called the Lagna in jyotiṣa. It is the sign that is rising at the eastern horizon at a specific time and location on the earth. While it includes the entire sign of the zodiac, a bhāva is composed of nine-pada each measuring 3°20’ (9 × 3°20’ = 30°). This can vary depending on the exact longitude of the lagna. Normally we would define the lagna as occupying a specific point of the zodiac and identify it with a sign, a constellation as well as the specific degree within that constellation. Lagna bhāva or Tanurbhāva refers to the house which deals with the body (tanu means physical body).
It is the most important as it marks the contact between the sky and the earth in the eastern horizon representing the object (or person) that has been created by the sky-father (Śiva) and the earth-mother (Gourī).
Since it starts the count (gaṇana), it is given the number “1” and is the seat of Gaṇeśa (Gaṇa + Iśa = Lord of the count or hosts).
Subjects of Tanu Bhāva: the self, identity, character, moral fibre, personality, the start of anything including life, beginning, conditions at birth and infancy, physical body, health, strengths and weaknesses, appearance and nature. It also deals with longevity, success and failure in life. In addition, basic instincts, tastes, longevity and the basic vitality and attitude to life.
Body Part: Head, hair, brain
Just as we have houses from Lagna, we have similar houses reckoned from (a) Moon sign for life force called Prāṇa, (b) Sun sign for everything life offers (dhana, bhoga) and (c) Ātmakāraka Graha for the soul and/or spirit.
