The lessons given in this part are extracts from a forthcoming book on Jyotiṣa by Sanjay Rath. You are not authorized to use this information for any purpose in any literature, course or paper. There will be some more lessons on this topic and will be covered in two months including one on Pañcāṅga: Five Limbs of Time.

Lesson VC#02: Tithi

This lesson should give you a very good understanding of Tithi, the sun-moon angle (actually angular difference). The material given here will not be found in any book available. There is a lot of work to be done by the students and it is hoped you will put in your best effort. As with the others, bear in mind that this is copyrighted material.

You are required to study this, complete the huge home work given including listing all the Tithi Pati and Devata and explaining them besides finishing the assignments. This is an important lesson as it aims at achieving the following –
1. Better understanding of Tithi, the Jala principle in the Panchanga
2. Realisation that the teachings of the various Puranas and other classical literature do not conflict with each other and instead are in perfect harmony. By doing so, you will set into motion a new ‘wave’ or mantra in your mind that will seek harmony in everything and you will realise the great joy one has when this understanding dawns. This is the akasha tattva that prevails in the mind of sages, and should prevail in the minds of all jyotishi. There is no difference or conflict between Parashara and any of the other vedic seers. Conflict starts from Varahamihira … and should end with our generation (hopefully).
